Design and classification of headphones

A headset is a combination of a microphone and headphones. A headset makes spoken communication possible without having to wear an earpiece or hold a microphone. It replaces, for example, a telephone handset and can be used to talk and listen at the same time. Other common uses of headsets are for gaming or video communications, in conjunction with a computer.

The various designs

Headsets are available in many different designs.

1. There exists a diverse array of headphone design styles available for selection, including the following prevalent types:

- Earplug headphones: These models are designed to be inserted directly into the ear canal, offering effective noise isolation and a secure fit.

- Headband headphones: These variants are anchored to the head via an adjustable headband and typically feature larger earcups, which enhance sound quality and comfort.

- In-ear headphones: These designs utilize hooks or clips to secure themselves in place, making them particularly suitable for sports and outdoor activities due to their superior stability.

- Bluetooth headphones: These devices connect wirelessly to other equipment using Bluetooth technology, providing convenience in portability and usage while being ideal for mobile communication.

- Wireless headphones: This category connects without wires through technologies such as Bluetooth or infrared, thereby removing the limitations associated with wired options and granting greater freedom of movement.

- Headphones with integrated microphones: These models come equipped with built-in microphones, making them appropriate for applications such as phone calls, voice recognition tasks, and gaming scenarios that necessitate audio recording.

Wired and wireless headsets in telephony

In telephony, both wireless and wired headsets are used. Wired headsets can be fitted with various different connectors. In addition to RJ-9 or RJ-11 connections, they often come with manufacturer-specific connectors. Functions or the electrical characteristics, such as the impedance, can vary greatly. With mobile phones there are headphones that have a microphone and connector cable that are usually connected via a jack plug to the device, allowing them to be used as a headset. There is often a volume control attached to the cable.

Wireless headsets are powered by batteries, which may be rechargeable, and communicate with a base station or directly with the telephone via radio. A wireless connection to a mobile phone or smartphone is usually managed via the Bluetooth standard. Headsets that communicate with a telephone or headset base via the DECT standard are also available.

Professional solutions, whether wired or wireless, usually allow you to mute the microphone with the press of a button. Important criteria when choosing a headset include the voice quality, the capacity of the battery and the maximum talk and standby times.
